By Car
Try to avoid Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass if possible as it is a challenging drive, even for accomplished drivers.
From the South
- Leave the M6 motorway at junction 36 for Kendal/Lakes.
- Follow signs to Barrow (A590).
- Turn right to Workington (A5092) 3 miles beyond Newby Bridge and follow this road to Broughton-in-Furness (10 miles).
- Turn right to Ulpha before the River Duddon (3/4 mile beyond Broughton).
- After 4 miles turn left in Ulpha village to the steep hill signed Eskdale.
- Follow the fell road to the King George IV pub (6 miles).
- Turn right
- At the Brook House (Poachers Bar) turn left into Boot village. Pass the Boot Inn on your left and immediately after the red phone box turn right into the lane before the small bridge.
- The road is labelled as private.
- Follow this track up the hill for approximately 1/2 mile. This is a single track that is quite steep in some areas, so proceed slowly and carefully. Gillbank Cottage is the first property on your left after you go over the stone track. If you reach the white farm yard, you have gone too far.
From the North
- Leave the M6 at Carlisle (junction 44) and follow the A595 (signed Barrow).
- Turn off at Gosforth and follow the road (6 miles) to Eskdale.
- Keep going right through Eskdale Village until you come to the George IV on your right.
- At the King George IV pub, turn left and follow as above.
- At the Brook House (Poachers Bar) turn left into Boot village. Pass the Boot Inn on your left and immediately after the red phone box turn right into the lane before the small bridge. The road is labelled as private.
- Follow this track up the hill for approximately 1/2 mile. This is a single track that is quite steep in some areas, so proceed slowly and carefully. There is a gate just before a straight stone track that says Gillbank Farm. Gillbank Cottage is the first property on your left just before the Gillbank Farm house. If you reach the white farm yard, you have gone too far.
By Rail
The village of Boot is served by the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. The closest main line station is Ravenglass for Eskdale from which the small gauge railway can be accessed.
